Ostomy 101

Learning the basics of ostomy care.

More than 750,000 Americans live with an ostomy, according to the United Ostomy Association of America. More than 130,000 ostomy surgeries occur annually in the United States.

But what exactly is an ostomy, anyway? Good question.

An ostomy is a surgical procedure used to create a “stoma,” which is an opening in the abdominal wall that allows for the passage of urine or digested food.

Among the types of ostomies are:

  • Colostomy, which involves bringing a portion of the large colon to the surface of the skin to form a stoma, usually on the left side of the stomach.
  • Ileostomy, which involves bringing a portion of the small intestine to the surface of the skin to form a stoma, usually on the right side of the stomach.
  • Urostomy (ileal conduit), which involves removal of the bladder and attaching kidney ureters to a small piece of intestine to create a tube. The tube is then brought to the surface of the skin to form a stoma, usually on the lower right side of the stomach.

Depending on the section of organ removed and the patient’s medical condition, an ostomy may be permanent or temporary. People with any type of ostomy can live full and active lives.
