Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Welcome to the St. Tammany Health System (STHS) Autism page.

What is Autism?

Autism is a spectrum disorder characterized by challenges in verbal and non-verbal social communication and interaction, as well as the presence of repetitive restrictive behaviors. The degree of severity in which one experiences autism greatly varies from person to person, making it exceptional to only that individual.

What is a Certified Autism Center?

A closer look at what it means – and why it matters.

A Certified Autism Center is a designation awarded to organizations with a minimum of 80% of its staff trained, certified, and committed to ongoing education in autism. Becoming a Certified Autism Center was the first step of STHS in becoming a better healthcare system for autistic individuals/individuals with autism.

STHS Certified Autism Centers include:

Accommodations and Support

St. Tammany Health System has created social stories and video models for an autistic individual/individual with autism who might find entering the hospital or clinic unsettling and unfamiliar.

These effective accommodations can decrease social stress by preparing the autistic individual/individual with autism on what to expect in face-to-face interactions and demonstrate what to do when overstimulated. Click link to learn more.

Support our Autism efforts

Autism is a spectrum, just like a rainbow is a spectrum of visible light, full of wonder and opportunity too. This April, St. Tammany Health System will be sharing our support for autistic individuals/individuals with autism in our community.
