The heart of St. Tammany, since 1954.

It started on Dec. 1, 1954 – at 7:30 a.m., to be exact.

That’s the day the very first patient, a heart attack patient, was admitted into the then-new St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington. Since then, the hospital – now the flagship facility of St. Tammany Health System – has been continuously delivering children, healing the sick and generally bettering the lives of Northshore families.

Just like the community it serves, the hospital has grown dramatically since the ribbon was cut on that 15-bed facility, a one-story rambler comprising 25,000 square feet. In fact, it hasn’t stopped growing, both in size and the types of services offered.

In addition to some two dozen satellite locations offering all manner of primary care and specialty services, the latest expansion of St. Tammany Health System’s main hospital campus gives it a total of 720,000 square feet of space and nearly 250 fully private patient rooms.

Staffed by a dedicated team of doctors specializing in hospital medicine, along with an army of nurses, technicians, social workers and other support staff, St. Tammany Parish Hospital is accredited by The Joint Commission and, with its emphasis on innovation and technology, has the distinction of being the oldest robotics institute on the Northshore.

All of that also makes it the premier healthcare facility in the region, positioning it for years to come to continue delivering on its promise of providing St. Tammany Parish residents world-class hospital care close to home.
