Health Equity at STHS

Founded in 1954 as a community hospital, St. Tammany Health System and its flagship St. Tammany Parish Hospital have witnessed no shortage of change in the subsequent decades. Our dedication to delivering compassionate, quality healthcare to the members of the community that founded us, however, has never wavered.

  • Establishment of Healthier Northshore, a coalition of community stakeholders united by an interest in improving local health metrics.
  • Introduction of the Be Well Bus and the Breathe Well Connection, two mobile health units designed to bring life-saving screenings directly into the communities we serve.
  • Creation of a dedicated dashboard to help hospital staff recognize and address social determinants that affect the health of patients.
  • Requirement of all colleagues to complete training on cultural sensitivity and unconscious bias.
  • Establishment of a therapeutic food pantry at St. Tammany Cancer Center – A Campus of Ochsner Medical Center, as well as support for the pantry’s multiple holiday food distribution events each year.
  • Creation of a patient transportation fund through the nonprofit St. Tammany Health Foundation to help cancer patients with transportation obstacles make it to needed treatments.
  • Organization of various community screening events including the yearly Man Up! men’s health screening event and its counterpart, Ladies Night Out, which targets women’s health concerns.
  • Participation in health-focused community events, including the American Heart Association’s Northshore Heart Walk and similar events.
  • In 2024, more than 90% of inpatients over age 18 were screened for food insecurity, housing and transportation needs—leading to the creation of an Emergency Food Pantry at the main campus after food insecurity emerged as the top concern.
  •

Health equity initiatives are informed by self-identified demographic data collected directly from patients, ensuring that strategies address real community needs and support meaningful, data-driven action.
