Parenting tips: How safe is your child online?

In our COVID-19 world, it is important now more than ever for parents to have conversations with our children about internet safety.

As screen time increases and parents’ patience decreases, it is still crucial to monitoring constantly what is or isn’t going in children’s social media feeds.

Below are some tips provided to you by The Parenting Center to help with promoting internet safety in your household:

  • Create a safe space for your children to talk to you about their social media outlets. If they feel comfortable with you, they are more likely to tell you when something makes them uncomfortable.
  • It is important to communicate to your children that they are not going to want to post their address, phone number, school, city, sports teams, parents’ workplaces, or passwords on their social media site. Communicate the importance of keeping their location private.
  • Communicate with your children the importance of not communicating with people they do not know online and to tell you immediately if somebody tries to reach out to them that they do not know. Explain the importance of never ever giving out personal information to people they do not know or meeting up with somebody they do not know.
  • Explain to children their “digital footprint” and that anything they put online will be permanent and will follow them throughout their lifetime. Explain to them the importance of putting their “best representation” of themselves online.

Parenting is one of the toughest jobs and the Parenting Center is here for you. If encouraging your children is something your family is struggling with, please reach out. We are here to help.
