Encouragement is key to building your child’s confidence

Alexis Dill MS PLMFT, adill@stph.org

When you encourage your children, you give them courage. Courage is one of the greatest gifts you can give your child. By giving them courage to do the “hard things.” It allows them to know that they can depend on you to lift them up during trying times.

Below are tips from the experts at St. Tammany Health System’s Parenting Center to help with encouraging your children:

  • Help your child, but do not do everything for them. Let them know you are there to help and that if they need you, they should say, “Help please.” They will let you know when they need help. Allow them the space to “learn by doing” and to make mistakes.
  • Help them to learn by taking one step at a time. Sometimes one large task can seem overwhelming. Praise them one step a time, until they are eventually able to tackle the entire task.
  • Believe in your child and speak positive words over him or her. Children look up to their parents so much and want to impress you. You are the most important person in the world to your child. If you believe in them, they will believe in themselves.
  • Always try to catch your child doing something good. By praising them, it will encourage them to want to continue doing it. Everybody loves being acknowledged for things they do well.

Parenting is one of the toughest jobs and the Parenting Center is here for you. If encouraging your children is something your family is struggling with, please reach out. We are here to help.
