COVINGTON – St. Tammany Health System’s flagship St. Tammany Parish Hospital has received the American Heart Association’s silver-level Get With The Guidelines – Resuscitation quality achievement award for 2026 in recognition of its dedication to delivering guideline-based care for in-hospital cardiac arrest, ultimately helping to improve survival rates.

The health system received the award for meeting specific measures in treating adult patients who experience cardiac arrest while hospitalized between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2025.

In‑hospital cardiac arrest remains a major clinical and quality‑of‑care challenge in U.S. hospitals. According to the American Heart Association’s 2026 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics Report, about one in four adults who experience in‑hospital cardiac arrest survive to hospital discharge, a rate that has improved over time and is substantially higher than survival after out‑of‑hospital arrest. Opportunities remain, however, to further strengthen in‑hospital resuscitation systems and improve outcomes for more patients.

The Get With The Guidelines – Resuscitation program was developed to support hospitals in saving the lives of people who experience in-hospital cardiac arrest by consistently following the most current, science-backed treatment guidelines as outlined by the American Heart Association. These guidelines address patient safety protocols, rapid medical emergency team response, high quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation and post-resuscitation care. Through Get With The Guidelines, the AHA brings its scientific expertise directly into hospitals nationwide, helping ensure care is aligned with the latest evidence-based practices.

“We are pleased to recognize St. Tammany Health System for its commitment to following the guidelines for in-hospital cardiac arrest,” said Paul Chan, M.D., MSc, volunteer chair of the American Heart Association Resuscitation System of Care Advisory Group. “Hospitals that participate in Get With The Guidelines often achieve better patient outcomes and improved survival rates – a meaningful win for health care systems, families and communities.”

This recent recognition comes on the heels of the health system’s receipt of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association’s bronze-level Get With The Guidelines – Stroke quality achievement award, coupled with the Target: Stroke Honor Roll distinction.
