Pfizer reports promising headway in COVID vaccine development

 By STHS Communication Department

COVINGTON, La. – With COVID fatigue setting in for many people after eight months of coronavirus precautions, news has emerged today that they’re might soon be light at the end of the tunnel.

According to The Associated Press and other major news outlets, pharmaceutical giant Pfizer says early data suggests its still-in-development COVID-19 vaccine could be as much as 90 percent effective at preventing the coronavirus.

Although Pfizer cautioned that it is still relatively early in the vaccine development process, stressing that numbers could change as trials expand, there’s reason to be hopeful.

“We’re in a position potentially to be able to offer some hope,” Dr. Bill Gruber, Pfizer’s senior vice president of clinical development, was quoted as saying. “We’re very encouraged.”

That being said, many questions remain unanswered, such as how long the vaccine’s effects last, whether it protects older people as well as it does younger people and – perhaps most importantly – when it could become widely available.

Still, “this is extremely promising,” said Dr. Jesse Goodman of Georgetown University.
