As part of its recognition of April as Autism Acceptance Month, St. Tammany Health Foundation is selling T-shirts and socks at Braswell’s Pharmacy and in the St. Tammany Parish Hospital gift shop. Proceeds raised will help support the health system’s ongoing efforts to better care for those with autism in our community. (STHS photo)
What does autism acceptance look like in a healthcare setting? We set out to find answers in this most recent episode of “Northshore Healthbeat,” the official podcast of St. Tammany Health System.
Released in recognition of April as World Autism Acceptance Month, this episode centers on insights from two experts in the field: Amy Wade, the director of pre-op and post-op at the St. Tammany Health System Surgery Center (which is one of the health system’s newest facilities to be designated a Certified Autism Center) and Sunny McDaniel, a local autism advocate and a member of the St. Tammany Health Foundation’s Board of Trustees.
With their help, we explore the real-world impact of autism-specific training, sensory-aware care and clear communication. Along the way, we learn how these efforts are transforming the patient experience at St. Tammany Health System.
